How to Get Rid of Split Ends & Prevent Them Too!

Split ends are an occasional-to-frequent problem for most of us and when they appear, they can really ruin your mood. Of course, a cut at your local hairdresser can get things shipshape and shiny again, but is there anything else we can do to keep them at bay?

Here, Adam Bryant our Rush Academy Director shares his top tips on getting rid of split ends and preventing them, to keep your ‘do looking its absolute best.

What causes split ends?

Damage to the protective outer layer of your hair causes split ends, but overuse of straighteners or curlers isn’t the only culprit!

Not using heat protectants while soaking up the sun’s rays, colouring your mane, plus daily wear and tear, and air pollution can all contribute to weakening your strands.

How to prevent split ends

Preventing split ends can involve lots of little changes to your self-care routine, so it should be pretty easy to start practising some of what Adam person preaches straightaway.

Use a soft and gentle brush

A good-quality hairbrush is an essential tool for combating split ends. The softer the bristles, the less likely you are to pull or tug at your mane, which can cause splitting. A natural bristle brush or a Tangle Teaser is ideal for gently running through your tresses.

Get your hair ready for bed

Crafting a nighttime routine for your hair is a small thing that can produce amazing results. Moving around in your sleep can cause knotting, which in turn can lead to weakened, splintering ends. Try putting your hair in a loose bun or plait before getting some zzzz’s, and consider investing in a silk pillowcase. Tucking in your tresses before bed can work wonders.

Turn the temp down on your heat tools

Another way to cure split ends is by limiting how often you reach for heated tools. Heat gradually damages your strands so step away from the straighteners (and the hairdryer) a couple of times a week, and always use a heat protectant, like Discipline Keratine Thermique. The least damaging way to use straighteners is to reduce the heat setting (ideally to 180 degrees) and make one slow pass down the hair shaft. Use a comb or brush to guide the straighteners, this will ensure you don’t add heat to any knots and therfore reduce the chance of breakage.

Eat healthy food for healthy hair

We know the wonders healthy eating can provide our bodies, and that goes for your locks too. A balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, helped along with lots of water, is a long-term method for preventing split ends, and feeling fantastic at the same time.

Don’t neglect your conditioner

Everyday life can leave our manes crying out for hydration. So, we advise you use conditioner every time you wash your hair and try using a hair mask like Kerastase Nutritive Masquintense once a week, to restore and lock in moisture.

How to get rid of split ends when you already have them

There’s no magic cure, but your hairdresser will be able to help!

Make sure your trims are regular

Regularly booking a trim will revitalise your locks and make you feel fabulous. Don’t worry if you’re trying to grow your mane; it’s a myth that regular cuts prevent growth. Instead, a routine trim can boost hair health! Just ask for your split ends to be cut, without having to compromise on your dream length.

Repair your hair with Olaplex

There are several ways to perform hair care for split ends. But sometimes, wear and tear can cause the bonds, that bind your locks together, to get damaged. If this happens and your mane needs urgent attention, find out how our Olaplex treatment repairs your broken bonds and puts them back together again.
